Introduction to Synthetic Dreadlocks

If you've always admired the unique and stylish look of dreadlocks but don't want to commit to permanent changes, synthetic dreadlocks are the perfect solution. Synthetic dreadlocks offer a temporary and versatile option for anyone looking to experiment with a new hairstyle. In this beginner's guide, we will cover everything you need to know about the installation to maintenance of synthetic dreadlock extensions.

Installation Process

The installation process of synthetic dreadlocks may seem intimidating, but with the right techniques and tools, you can achieve a seamless and professional look. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

  1. Start with clean hair: It is essential to wash and thoroughly dry your hair before installing synthetic dreadlocks. This ensures that the dreads attach securely and last longer.
  2. Section your hair: Divide your hair into small sections using clips or hair ties. This will make the installation process more manageable and prevent tangling.
  3. Add synthetic dreadlock: Take a synthetic dreadlock extension and attach it to your natural hair using a crochet hook for single ended dreadlocks or the braiding method for double ended dreadlocks. For both single and double ended dreadlocks you will braid the extension in. either use the dreadlock as the third strand in your braid or braid around the extension by using the wrap and twist method (like braiding but to one side of the dreadlock).
  4. Secure the dreads: Once the synthetic hair is attached, use a rubber band or string to secure the ends of each dread. This will prevent them from unraveling and give a neater appearance.
  5. Style your dreads: After installing the synthetic dreadlocks, you can style them according to your preference. You can leave them as they are for a natural look or accessorize them with beads, charms, or colorful wraps.

Maintenance Tips

To ensure your synthetic dreadlocks look their best and last for an extended period, proper maintenance is crucial. Here are some maintenance tips to keep in mind:

  • Keep them clean: Regularly wash your synthetic dreadlocks using a mild shampoo and warm water. Gently massage the scalp to remove any dirt or buildup.
  • Avoid excessive moisture: While it's important to keep your dreads clean, excessive moisture can cause them to become heavy. But, they dry quickly and don't hold water because they are not porous like real hair. Yes, you can use a hair dryer to quickly dry them after showers or swimming to keep the weight down.
  • Retouch the roots: As your natural hair grows, the synthetic dreadlocks will pull away from your scalp and your hair will start to dread naturally. Take the elastic out of problem areas, brush out your hair in that section to remove the hair that naturally falls out over time and braid the dreadlock extension back in. Thus ensuring a seamless look.
  • Protect your dreads: When sleeping, consider wearing a satin or silk bonnet or using a silk pillowcase to minimize friction.
  • If you find your extensions are not as soft as you would like, try soaking them in a baking soda water mixture for 15-20 minutes and rinse twice with hot water to make sure they are clean. Then soak them in Apple Cider Vinegar for 5 minutes, rinsing well again with hot water at least twice. You can do this with them on or off your scalp but remember that baking soda will mess with the Ph balance of your scalp so don't leave it on longer than the recommended time.

Conclusion

Synthetic dreadlocks offer a fantastic opportunity to experiment with a new hairstyle without the long-term commitment. By following the installation and maintenance tips outlined in this beginner's guide, you can rock your synthetic dreadlocks with confidence. Remember, practice makes perfect, so don't be discouraged if it takes a few tries to achieve your desired look. Embrace this exciting journey and enjoy the versatility and unique style that synthetic dreadlocks can bring to your life.
